Esther Hewlett has a longstanding interest in promoting female human rights and an equal voice for women in their societies, especially in developing countries. Her service from l990-1998 on the board of the Global Fund for Women (GFW), an international grantmaking organization that gives small grants to grass roots women’s groups all over the world, has been a focal point for her activities. She has visited GFW grantees in Bangladesh, Nepal, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, and attended the NGO Forum in Beijing with her daughter. Currently Esther serves on the board of CEDPA, an international non-governmental organization working with community partners globally to strengthen women’s voices through advocacy and capacity building. She is also Co-founder of Youth Philanthropy Worldwide (YPW). YPW’s mission is to inspire young people to become informed, caring, and active members of the global community. Esther has previously served on the board of the Flora Family Foundation, and is a past President of Cap and Gown Women’s Honor Society at Stanford. She received a BA in Chinese from Stanford University and an MA in Asian Studies from the University of California at Berkeley.
