Sandra Aguebor (NPOM, MFR), Nigeria’s first female auto-mechanic, started her auto garage, SANDEX CARE CARE in 1996—a world-class auto repair shop! In 2004, she founded the Lady Mechanic Initiative (LMI), a non-profit enterprise, to empower girls and women with mechanical skills to enable them to become certified professionals in the field of automobile repairs.
The Lady Mechanic Initiative has graduated over 700 lady mechanics, whom now operate their own garages, and train new female mechanics. The success story of the Lady Mechanic Initiative has attracted both local and international attention, earning Aguebor several local and international awards. The most recent one being a congratulatory letter from the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and hosting of First Lady of Germany, H.E. Daniela Schadt in 2016.
In 2014 the Lady Mechanic Initiative, with the support of MacArthur Foundation-Chicago, launched ‘The Lady Mechanic After-School Club’ in selected public Secondary Schools in Nigeria. Also, for the first time, LMI overcame the religious and cultural barriers in the core Northern Nigeria to train a total of 20 women in Kano State as Professional Lady Mechanic-Drivers. The assembling of cars and the production of automobile spare-parts in Nigeria is her dream. www.ladymechanicinitiative.org.
