Shulamith Koenig

People's Movement for Human Rights Education

Since 1988, Shulamith Koenig has been the Founder and Executive Director of PDHRE, People’s Movement (Decade) for Human Rights Learning, a non-profit international organization, based in New York, with the purpose of reaching out to six billion women and men across the globe for them to know and claim their human rights as a birth right. Shulamith Koenig initiated and spearheaded the call for a UN Decade for Human Rights Education, and embarked on a worldwide advocacy and implementation campaign called “human rights education and learning across all sectors of society”, with the UN Human Rights Center and the UN Commission on Human Rights, at the Vienna Human Rights Conference. These efforts resulted in the launching of the UN Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2005). Shulamith Koenig directly and indirectly organized and conducted consultation and workshops with educators, human rights advocates, and community leaders in more then 60 countries in Asia, Africa, Central Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. He participated actively in all the UN Summits since 1993 and held workshops and training about human rights education at each one of these international meetings and worked to include in the International Declarations and Plan of Actions the need of human rights education as an imperative for women’s and men’s participation in the decisions that determine their lives.
